Society of American Business Editors and Writers honors Star's business section

Mar 25, 2009 (The Kansas City Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Kansas City Star's business section has been recognized for "overall excellence" by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

Two other business sections -- those of the Detroit Free Press and the Rocky Mountain News, which recently closed after nearly 150 years in business -- were also recognized in the large-newspapers category, which covers papers with daily circulations of between 225,000 and 325,000.

"The Kansas City Star is committed to aggressively covering business and economic stories that affect its community, from the U.S. Capitol and Wall Street to the corner store," according to contest judges.

The Star "gets the big stories right, but it also goes deep, filling inside pages with staff-written stories and briefs," according to the judges. "The paper goes where many daily business sections rarely tread, offering comprehensive stories on such things as endowment spending, federal grants and the business of hospitals." This marks the second time in the past four years that The Star's business section has been honored as one of the newspaper industry's best.

"At a critical time in the newspaper industry, The Star's business staff continues to hold itself to the highest journalism standards," said Mike Fannin, the editor/vice president of the newspaper. "This is a special group of talented, passionate and well-sourced journalists. Kansas City can be proud that its leading voice for business news has been recognized as one of the nation's very best." Among newspapers with circulations of more than 325,000, the society cited The New York Times, the Star Tribune of Minneapolis and The Washington Post for overall excellence.

The society also cited "Sprint Connection," a blog written by Kansas City Star business reporters Jason Gertzen and David Hayes, as one of the three best blogs in the large-Web sites category. The blog covers news about Sprint Nextel Corp. and the wireless industry.
