Truphone VoIP application available on iPhone

(Telecomworldwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge)
Truphone (a trading name and trademark of Software Cellular Network
Limited) announced on 10 July that its VoIP application, currently in
beta but already available on several types of mobile handsets, is also
now available on the iPhone.

The Truphone application allows users with Wi-Fi equipped and connected
mobile handsets to make VoIP calls from anywhere in the world to a
fixed or mobile phone. Truphone claim that their charges for
international calls are much lower than the charges (including roaming
charges) made by mobile phone network operators.

Calls to countries in the 'Tru Zone', which covers the UK, Brazil,
Australia, Thailand, Japan, Russia, Hong Kong, almost all of Europe and
several other areas, cost GBP0.03 (USD0.06) per minute to landlines and
GBP0.15 (USD0.30 to mobiles), with calls to the US, Canada and China
costing a flat rate of GBP0.03 per minute to both landlines and
mobiles. Calls to countries in the 'Outer Zone' are slightly more
expensive. Calls to countries that are not specifically included in any
zone are priced on the Truphone website.

Calls to other Truphone mobile users connected to the network at the

time the call is placed are free. The cost of connecting to a local
Wi-Fi hotspot is not included in these prices. SMS messages can be sent
to any location and from any location in the world for a flat rate of
GBP0.10 (USD0.20).

The Truphone application can be downloaded from the company's website
or from the Apple Store. Registration (free) on the Truphone website
gives users an automatic GBP2.00 credit. Truphone make it clear that
its application cannot be used for emergency calls and should not be
seen as a replacement for an ordinary telephone but that the
application is intended to allow people to save money on long distance
calls from mobile telephones.
