SID Rolls Out Blockbuster Program of Luminary Speakers and Key Exhibitor Showcases at 46th Annual Display Week 2008

SAN JOSE, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- The Society for Information Display (SID)--the leading global organization dedicated to the advancement of electronic display technology--today announced highlights and important updates to the final program for Display Week 2008: The SID International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition. At this year's forum--which will be held May 18-23, 2008 at the Los Angeles Convention Center--A-list display luminaries representing leading manufacturers and research institutions will deliver keynote addresses on a range of topics stressing the breadth of opportunities, as well as emerging trends, associated with displays. In addition, manufacturers from all aspects of display technology will premier numerous innovations at Display Week, including new developments in OLED, LCD, backlighting, power sources, projection systems and touchscreen technology, to name a few.



"Display Week 2008 will certainly be action-packed--with a number of interesting sessions and panels surrounding all facets of the display industry," said SID President-elect, Dr. Paul Drzaic. Exceptional Keynotes to Address Multiple Facets of Display Business/Market Opportunities



Kicking off Display Week 2008 on Tuesday morning, May 20, will be keynotes from the following top executives:

-- Paul (Shuang-Lang) Peng, senior vice president and general manager, Information Technology Display Business Group, AU Optronics Corp.--Peng's keynote will discuss the need for a long-term environmental commitment within the TFT-LCD industry, and offer insight into how companies can develop best practices that improve both the bottom line and environmental footprint, using AU Optronics' Green Solutions initiative as an example.

-- Yoshito Shiraishi, general manager, E-Products and Business Development Department, TV Business Group, Sony Corp.--Shiraishi's keynote will look at both the challenges of being the first organic light-emitting diode (OLED)-based TV manufacturer and the long-term business opportunities for OLEDs in the display marketplace.

-- Mary Lou Jepsen, founder, Pixel Qi Corp.--Jepsen, who co-founded the non-profit organization One Laptop per Child (OLPC), will discuss the creation of OLPC, its business model and the design of the XO $100 laptop in her keynote, "Why Displays Lead When Designing Computers for the Very Poorest." Jepsen will also describe a future where the display will play a pivotal role in the initial design and architecture of portable electronic devices.

In addition, premiering during Display Week's new 3D Cinema Session on Wednesday, May 21, will be a luncheon keynote by Andy Hendrickson, VP of technology for Walt Disney Animation Studios. Hendrickson will delve into the evolution of display technology and the various display-related challenges and opportunities specific to the entertainment industry.

Hot, New Display Innovations to be Showcased at Display Week

The following are a selection of companies that will be exhibiting at Display Week, along with highlights of key products and technologies to be showcased at the forum:

-- Digital View (Booth #737) will be demonstrating enhancement tools for remote monitoring of digital signage systems to ensure they are operating at optimal levels of efficiency. These tools include ambient light sensors that dim or brighten displays to optimize appearance in tune with changing ambient light conditions, temperature sensors with heating and cooling management that automatically adjust to variations in operating temperature and relative humidity, pan and zoom capability via joystick, and more.

-- DuPont (Booth #119) will be highlighting its recent announcement to form a strategic alliance with Dainippon Screen Manufacturing Co., Ltd., to develop integrated manufacturing equipment for printed OLED displays. The companies also have signed an agreement relating to their intention to bring together the elements needed - materials, technology and equipment - to mass produce OLED displays, delivering higher performance at a lower cost. In addition, DuPont will showcase its next-generation DuPont(TM) Vertak(TM) bonding adhesive for LCD enhancement, which is now especially formulated for ease of reworkability, a feature highly prized by display manufacturers.

-- Endicott Research Group (Booth #343) is a leader in power sources for information displays, and plans to unveil at Display Week, its new Smart Force(TM) SFDE LED backlight driver--a high-efficiency driver board that has an extremely low profile of less than 5 mm in height, provides brightness stability over a wide input voltage (8-18V), and provides external pulse-width modulation (PWM) dimming to 500:1.

-- Epson (Booth #819) is debuting its new OLED display systems capable of producing the "Ultimate Black". To realize the requisite high-quality representation of textures, Epson has been uncompromising in its efforts to achieve "the ultimate black", since it is black that holds the key to overall image quality. In addition, Epson has addressed the problem of early stage brightness deterioration by improving the light-emitting materials and through the development of Epson's own original element structure. As a result, Epson has succeeded in lengthening the life of the display system to more than 50,000 hours.

-- Five Star Technologies (Booth #661) will highlight its ElectroSperse(TM) P-series silver-based conductor pastes, which are designed for use on low temperature plastic substrates typically found in such applications as display electrodes, touch screen sensors, heaters, RFID antenna, biosensors and membrane switches. The initial P-series products are targeted for use in touch screen sensors, combining high productivity and ease of use with excellent conductivity and exceptional printability.

-- Global Lighting Technologies (Booth #449) will showcase new LED-based high-brightness backlights that offer exceptional thinness (to 0.4 mm) to enable backlighting of LCDs, as well as enable keypads and keyboards used in mobile phones, and laptop and desktop personal computers.

-- LG Display (Booth #519) will showcase its latest cutting-edge display technologies, which will include the largest 52" Multi-touch Full HD Display for public displays, a 15" TFT-LCD made by an All Layer Roll Printing Process and a 6" oval TFT-LCD, 1.4" round TFT-LCD for small and medium displays, demonstrating the company's ability to change the shape/design of LCDs--3D. The company will also feature a 15" Dual Plate a-Si AM OLED as well as flexible e-book displays, including its 14.3" Color Electrophoretic Display.

-- Microsemi Corporation (Booth #229) will feature their advanced lighting technology DAZL! (TM), CCFL controllers, backlight inverters, visible light sensors and LED drivers.

-- Microvision (Booth #849), a developer of ultra-miniature projection display and image capture technology for mobile devices, will demonstrate a variety of devices enabled by its novel PicoP(TM) display module. This includes an advanced prototype of its pocket-sized laser projector, code named "SHOW."

-- OSRAM Opto Semiconductors (Booth #435) will demonstrate the use of its OSTAR(R)-Projection high-performance LED light source in illuminating Ostendo Technologies' CRVD(TM) ultra-wide 42-inch curved display--a new rear-projection digital light processing (DLP(R)) screen that wraps 2880 x 900 pixels around the viewer while providing 68.7 billion colors, more than 300 nits brightness, and a contrast ratio of 10,000:1. The CRVD-42 curved display is ideal for applications like simulation, gaming, financial analysis, digital imaging and web-content creation, among others.

-- Pavonine (Booth #653) will showcase its stereoscopic TFT-LCD with a wire grid polarizer on a patterned retarder embedded inside. This technology is an improvement on Pavonine's 5.5-inch VGA stereoscopic 3D display using a patterned polarizer.

-- RPO Inc. (Booth #762), the creator of Digital Waveguide Touch (DWT), will demonstrate its newest products in mobile devices. DWT elegantly maximizes display brightness with no screen overlay and creates multi-touch capability for fingers--including gloved fingers--pen or stylus. RPO is announcing a new device sampling program and will begin qualifying customers after the show.

-- Samsung Electronics (Booth #508) is exhibiting an 82" TV panel, which is the largest commercial LCD TV in the world. Samsung will showcase its technological leadership in ultra-slim panels by exhibiting 40" and 52" panels less than 10mm thick. The company is also unveiling a series of green products with environmentally friendly components. Lastly, it will also be demonstrating a white e-board (electronic blackboard for corporate and institutional applications), which will feature ultra-high resolution (4K*2K) and a 120Hz driver and embedded touch sensors.

-- Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas (Booth #219) is demonstrating a wide variety of its consumer and industrial LCD solutions for SID attendees. These will include new additions to its Strong 2 industrial display family. Sharp's Strong 2 criterion defines stringent standards for brightness, contrast, vibration, shock, and temperature range to ensure its industrial panels deliver premium performance in even the most rugged of environments.

-- UniPixel (Booth #911) will make the first public debut of its Time Multiplexed Optical Shutter (TMOS) display technology, a next-generation color display technology that can be used in cell phones, notebooks, TVs and more. UniPixel's TMOS displays boast enhanced brightness, improved picture quality, low power consumption and flexible design in capabilities in comparison to other FPD technologies such as LCD and plasma--all while reducing costs.

-- Vertex LCD (Booth #110) announces three new products at Display Week this year. "Energy-Saving" Color TFT LCD panels for POS monitor applications for the Green initiative; proprietary NVIS displays for the military that exceed MIL standards; and its pre-emptive "Adaptive Transflective" displays employing LED backlight unit designs that provide the lowest power and highest brightness for greater view ability and lowest cost of operation.

-- Wacom (Booth #1129) will debut its Reversing Ramped Field Capacitive (RRFC(TM)) touchscreen technology, which overcomes many limitations inherent in current surface capacitive touchscreens to deliver pinpoint precision and drift-free performance to users. Wacom's RRFC touch technology offers superior optical performance compared to resistive capacitive technologies, while also providing increased sensitivity and durability.
