TORONTO, May 25 /CNW/ - Canada's Department of National Defence has awarded the Armoured Heavy Support Vehicle System (AHSVS) contract to Mercedes-Benz for the provision of 82 armoured heavy support vehicles with an option to procure 26 additional AHSVS of various variants. Mercedes-Benz won the competitive selection process against two other well-known truck manufacturers; its Actros heavily armoured cab was deemed to be the best equipment to meet the needs of the men and women of the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan.

Canada initiated a fair, open and competitive tender process with the objective of acquiring a proven, off the shelf armoured heavy logistics vehicle.

The acquisition of the Mercedes-Benz Actros provides the Canadian Army with high levels of crew protection as well as a robust heavy logistics vehicle. The four-axle (8x8) all-terrain Mercedes-Benz "Armoured Heavy Actros" is based on the successful series production Actros, of which more than 450,000 are currently providing reliable service in various sectors as well as in logistics operations with over 50 armies all over the world.

The combination of a tried-and-trusted basic vehicle, a proven protection concept, worldwide parts supply and service backup enabled Mercedes-Benz Canada and the German Truck division to put together a compelling offer.

Mercedes-Benz Canada President and CEO, Marcus Breitschwerdt said, "We are honoured to have been chosen to supply such critical equipment for the men and women of the Canadian Forces. The Mercedes-Benz Actros' inherent features, quality, reliability and strong global track record were certainly key factors to winning such an important contract with the Department of National Defence."
