Pakistan probing reports about al-Zawahiri's death+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)ISLAMABAD, Jan. 14_(Kyodo) _ Pakistan government officials said Saturday they are investigating reports that al-Qaida's No. 2 man Ayman al-Zawahiri might have been killed in the U.S. bombing of a Pakistani tribal area bordering Afghanistan early Friday morning.

"We have heard the report. We are investigating and the situation should be clear in few hours," Information and Media Development Minister Rashid Ahmad told Kyodo News by telephone.

Defense Ministry spokesman Sahaukat Sultan said that he was not in a position to confirm or deny the report but would be in a position to say something about the veracity of the report by midday.

CNN earlier reported that Zawahiri was the target of U.S. rocket attacks on a house in Damadola, a small village near the Afghan border, and that at least 14 people were killed.
