Motorola's ROKR in India by '07

(The Economic Times (India) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) HONG KONG: The much-anticipated upgrade to the iTunes-enabled phone - ROKR E6 - has finally arrived. Motorola's CEO Ed Zander announced the launch of its new flagship entertainment PDA - MOTOROKR E6 in Hong Kong on Monday, the venue for this year's International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The ROKR E6, in a candy-bar format, replaces iTunes in the previous ROKRs for a RealPlayer and supports various other formats like MP3, MPEG-4, AAC+, WAV, RealAudio, WMA along with a Bluetooth stereo audio.

The ROKR E6 is slated to hit Indian markets by mid 2007, although, Motorola did not confirm the official launch date in India.

The ROKR E6, according to Zander, will change the way we look at mobile devices and digital entertainment space. This multi-media PDA will bundle in visual entertainment along with creating, enjoying and sharing games and photos.

Zander, also emphasized the need to 'connect the unconnected' in order to increase the mobile subscribers base around the world.

Zander told ET that the MOTOFONE's global launch in New Delhi recently reinforced the mobile manufacturer's commitment to 'connect the unconnected' in India.

"The need to connect the millions who are unconnected is an ongoing process in markets such as China, India and other Asian countries through introductions of such products like the MOTOFONE and other efforts on the retail front.

We will see more such products in the future which will enable us to reach this huge unconnected population," he said.

The MOTOFONE was launched on the November 28, priced at around Rs 1,600, bundled with a BSNL or Airtel connection. The ROKR E6 is a dual-band GSM and GPRS phone with a touch-screen and a stylus interface.

The phone runs on Linux and has a 2.0 mega pixel digital camera. The ROLR E6 is touted as a sleek entertainment handset high on video, music, games and photos. The ROKR E6 just got onto the FCC database, so it'll still take some time to come out and get a price tag.
