China Mobile Registers .mobi
(China IT Watch Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)BEIJING, Jun 01, 2006 (SinoCast China IT Watch via COMTEX) --China Mobile, the largest mobile telecom carrier in the country, becomes the first enterprise in Asia registering .mobi mobile phone domain name, and chinamobil.mobi, accordingly, becomes the first .mobi mobile phone domain name in the region.
The registering is completed through DNS.com.cn, Asia''s first .mobi mobile phone domain name service provider. After DNS.com.cn announced the debut of .mobi mobile phone domain name registering service on April 18, China Mobile submitted application materials at the earliest time.
China Mobile is one of the members and directors of the GSM Association in China, and also one of the few Chinese enterprises that meet the requirement of .mobi mobile phone domain name "priority registration period for restricted industries." So it rightly procured the first .mobi mobile phone domain name in Asia.
.mobi mobile phone domain name, approved and opened by ICANN in 2005, is designed to mobile phones and the other mobile devices. Similar to .com and .net, it is a top domain name in the world as well.
Zhai Feng, a director of DNS.com.cn, said that after the priority registration period for restricted industries, ordinary enterprises may apply for registering .mobi mobile phone domain name in the brand priority registering period, priority formal registering period, and formal registering period.
Telecom experts remarked that the priority registration period for restricted industries is tantamount to a protection period for telecom carriers. After all, they will take the lead in using mobile phone domain name and developing corresponding businesses.
So far, China Mobile has registered 19 brand domain names in total.
After DNS.com.cn''s debut of the service on April 18, .mobi domain name became a hot topic in the mobile Internet industry. What people concern most is its differences with the other domain names.
.mobi is compulsory in some aspects, and the page layout of domain name resolution should conform to WAP 2.0 criteria to ensure that users can visit WAP website through mobile phones directly. In addition, channels and pictures processed technically are more suitable to be browsed through mobile phone screens.
.mobi is the first top domain name specially used for mobile devices, and its initiators include Vodafone, Ericsson, Nokia, GOOGLE, Microsoft, and Samsung. Furthermore, there are overall 400 million mobile phone users in China. So .mobi mobile phone domain name will have a broad prospect in the Chinese market for sure.
MTLD forecast that the registration volume of .mobi mobile phone domain name will exceed 1 million in the coming three years in the world, according to Zhai Feng.
It can be imagined that with the gradual growth of the mobile Internet industry, .mobi mobile phone domain name will become a new ground for enterprises to promote and sell their products. .mobi is still in the preliminary stage in China, and more and more enterprises will apply for it in the future for sure.
Zhai Feng also said that a good many foreign enterprises have started to register their own brands, such as AT&T (ATT.mobi), T-Mobile (T-Mobile.mobi), Nortel Network (Notel.mobi), and CISCO (CISCO.mobi). "Obviously, this a general trend," he said.
