Vietnam, Japan start second FTA study session in Tokyo

(Thai Press Reports Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Section: Regional News - Vietnam and Japan began their second study session in Tokyo on April 26 to explore the possibility of signing a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA).

Japan has set a target of concluding the feasibility study to launch formal FTA talks later this year, a Japanese official said at the three-day meeting.

The two countries conducted their first study session in Hanoi last February.

Vietnam and Japan started their study sessions after an agreement to establish such a framework was reached between Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and his Japanese counterpart Junichiro Koizumi in December 2005.

Regarding ASEAN members, Japan has so far signed FTAs with Singapore and Malaysia. It has also reached basic accords for similar undertakings with the Philippines and Thailand, and been in official talks with Indonesia. - VNA
