Yahoo's Yang welcomes attempts to shore up mobile content in Japan+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)TOKYO, March 28_(Kyodo) _ Yahoo! Inc. co-founder Jerry Yang said Tuesday the Internet search engine group will seek opportunities to strengthen its presence as a content provider for mobile phone users.

Yang welcomed the recently announced plan by major Japanese Internet firm Softbank Corp., the largest shareholder in Yahoo Japan Corp., to buy British mobile phone operator Vodafone Group Plc's business in Japan.

"I think it's a very great opportunity for Yahoo Japan to be involved in the mobile business," he said in an interview with Kyodo News. Yahoo! Inc. is "spending a lot of energy and time" on mobile products and services, "so we think Yahoo! Inc. can help Yahoo Japan...set up products and services for the mobile market."

Yahoo! Inc. is the second-biggest stakeholder in Yahoo Japan.

Although Yahoo Japan has its own unit to develop and provide content to those using mobile phones to access the Internet, Yang said the Japanese company has been missing a "very strong partnership with one of the phone carriers."

The deal with Vodafone K.K. "will allow Yahoo Japan to have a more strategic link with a phone carrier," he said. "We'll be able to do new things, to try new things hopefully more quickly."

On March 17, the Softbank and Vodafone groups reached an agreement that the former will acquire the British firm's entire 97.7 percent stake in its Japan unit for 1.75 trillion yen ($15 billion) in the biggest-ever buyout deal struck by a Japanese company.

With the acquisition, Softbank will become Japan's third-largest telecommunications company after the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. group and KDDI Corp. by taking over Vodafone K.K.'s current 15 million subscribers.

Softbank Chief Executive Officer Masayoshi Son has expressed his intention to boost Vodafone's services in Japan, mainly focusing on satisfying Vodafone users with Yahoo Japan's online content.
