Gemplus to Develop R-UIM Smart Cards for TELUS Mobility

LUXEMBOURG and SCARBOROUGH, Canada, September 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gemplus International S.A. (Euronext: LU0121706294 - GEM and NASDAQ: GEMP), the world's leading provider of smart card solutions, today announced it has been selected by TELUS Mobility to develop R-UIM cards that will tie together the Canadian wireless carrier's CDMA and iDEN networks and enable world roaming on GSM networks.

"The ability to tie together CDMA, iDEN and GSM networks to enhance roaming options will give clients increased mobile freedom, enabling them to travel and do business more efficiently," said Robert Blumenthal, TELUS Mobility's Vice President of Products and Services. "Gemplus' proven track record of providing high-quality smart cards makes it an ideal partner in the development of R-UIM cards."
R-UIM smart cards authenticate and identify individual subscribers on wireless networks, enabling them to freely carry their subscription and personal information from phone to phone, and around the world.
TELUS Mobility, which already uses Gemplus SIM cards in its iDEN Mike phones, is researching the benefits of expanding smart cards to its CDMA network. With this move, TELUS Mobility joins the other 40 CDMA operators using R-UIM, including operators located in China, India, Japan and Brazil.
"Gemplus is pleased to support TELUS Mobility as it develops R-UIM technology in Canada and thus the inherent smart card advantages of portability and security. "We will continue to work closely with TELUS Mobility to optimize the value of smart cards in their networks," said Ernie Berger, President of Gemplus North America.
