Fonix DECtalk Adds New Platforms and Languages; Fonix DECtalk 4.6.3 Offers 'Classic Voices' Important to Assistive Market

SALT LAKE CITY --(Business Wire)-- March 3, 2005 -- Fonix Speech, an operating division of Fonix(R) Corp. (OTC BB: FNIX), an integrated communications carrier providing telecommunications services and value-added speech technologies, releases version 4.6.3 of its Fonix DECtalk(TM) text-to-speech (TTS) technology. This new version re-releases the "classic" DECtalk TTS voices many DECtalk users have relied upon for years, offers a number of new features and supports additional operating systems.

Fonix DECtalk 4.6.3 is based on DECtalk technology that has been developed and refined over the past 20 years. Fonix DECtalk is the smallest footprint, full-featured, multi-language TTS in the industry. Version 4.6.3 supports the widest array of hardware platforms and operating systems on the market and offers nine voices and seven languages.

Fonix DECtalk currently supports the following OSs:

-- Windows 98/NT/2000/ME/XP

-- Windows CE 3.0/4.x/.NET/Windows Mobile 2003

-- Linux Kernels 2.2/2.4

-- ARM 7/9, Intel XScale, TI OMAP, MIPS, Renesas SH3/4

Version 4.6.3 adds the following OS compatibility to the already supported OSs:

-- Mac OS 10 or higher

-- Symbian platforms 1 and 2 (Nokia Series 60)

-- Symbian UIQ 2.0 and 2.1

-- Linux V2.65 kernel

-- Palm OS V5

-- QNX version 6.1 (or higher)

"By expanding the breadth of operating systems supported, Fonix can better meet the needs of our customers and the demands of an expanding market, thereby growing our customer base and revenues," said Walt Nawrocki, senior VP and general manager, Fonix Speech.

Fonix DECtalk 4.6.3 adds Italian to the list of available languages (U.S. and U.K. English, Castilian and Latin American Spanish, French and German) and also improves the naturalness and intelligibility of German and Spanish. DECtalk 4.6.3 offers nine TTS voices as well as the nine classic voices for each language (18 total voices for each language).

"Fonix realizes that many users, particularly in the assistive market, rely upon the familiar DECtalk TTS voices that they have become accustomed to over the years," said Nawrocki. "Fonix DECtalk 4.6.3 allows developers to provide user access to the new, improved synthesis TTS voices as well as the nine classic DECtalk voices circa 1993, including 'Perfect Paul.' This feature makes DECtalk 4.6.3 even more convenient for end users and more attractive to manufacturers."

Fonix DECtalk TTS voices include:

-- Paul

-- Harry

-- Dennis

-- Frank

-- Betty

-- Ursula

-- Rita

-- Wendy
