Sourcefire Introduces 8 Gigabit Enterprise Network Intrusion Prevention

COLUMBIA, Md. --(Business Wire)-- Feb. 15, 2005 -- The Only Intrusion Solution to Combine the Performance of Custom Network Processors with the Flexibility and Precision of Software-Based Solutions

Sourcefire, Inc., the world leader in real-time network defense, introduced its flagship Intrusion Prevention technology, the IS5800 Series, at the RSA conference in San Francisco, California. Sourcefire is demonstrating this addition to its IPS line as one of the select vendors invited to participate in the RSA Innovation Station event. The IS5800 is capable of operating at line rates up to 8 gigabits and is architected specifically to meet the requirements of enterprise networks.

With extreme flexibility, long a Sourcefire hallmark, the IS5800 Series can be deployed in an array of configurations to suit nearly any network requirement and combination of mission-critical applications, including latency sensitive applications like Voice Over IP (VoIP). Based on its industry-standard Snort(R) technology, Sourcefire's award-winning Intrusion Sensors have emerged as an industry leader and feature comprehensive protection against enterprise threats such as worms, viruses and spyware.

"As owner of the intellectual property of Snort, the widely respected open source detection engine, Sourcefire has a position of rare privilege in its visibility into the effective deployment of network security," said Enterprise Management Associates' Scott Crawford, "Today, Sourcefire is extending that leadership."

Capable of exceeding the requirements of even the most demanding IT organizations, the IS5800 Series combines the extreme performance of custom application specific processors (ASICS) with the flexibility of up to 14 Motorola PowerPC(R) CPUs. The IS5800 Series also includes hot-swap and high availability features for all main system components including power supplies, interface cards, disk drives and processors.

"First generation Intrusion Prevention technologies forced the enterprise user to trade security for raw performance," said Martin Roesch, Sourcefire Founder and Chief Technology Officer. "Purely ASIC-based solutions, by their very nature, cannot adapt quickly. Network threats, on the other hand, are changing constantly. With the IS5800, Sourcefire has met these realities head-on and delivered a solution that provides incredible performance while maintaining the ability to adapt the instant that changes are needed."

"The quality of signatures and behavior analysis has become a differentiator for IPS product selections," said Greg Young, Research Director with Gartner. "Other selection criteria include multi-device management, including correlation and bidirectional communication with management consoles, management reporting, throughput and performance, reduced latency and increased steadiness under load and attack. The newer generation of network IPS is improving behavior engines with information inputs from vulnerability assessment products and network intelligence sources. Organizations deploying network security products should look for their integration with vulnerability assessment and network intelligence solutions."

The NSS Group will be certifying the IS5800 Series in its first-ever multigig IPS test slated for the second half of 2005. Pricing for the IS5800 Series begins at $89,500 and is available for evaluation immediately. General availability is scheduled for June.

About Sourcefire's 3D System

Sourcefire's 3D Approach - Discover, Determine, Defend - to securing real networks in real-time provides proactive defense-in-depth through an integrated process of discovering risks, vulnerabilities and threats; determining their business impact ;and taking the appropriate action to defend the network. Sourcefire's 3D System, including Sourcefire Intrusion Sensors and Agents, Sourcefire RNA Sensors and the Sourcefire Defense Center, provides companies with the most effective security possible.

The Sourcefire 3D System offers the most flexible and precise intrusion detection and network discovery technologies worldwide. Sourcefire Intrusion Sensors utilize the award-winning Snort(TM) rules-based detection engine, bringing the benefits of signature, protocol, and anomaly-based inspection methods to all varying network traffic speeds. In addition, Sourcefire RNA Sensors passively monitor a network to deliver highly detailed, real-time profiles of all network assets including their configuration, behavior, potential vulnerabilities and associated changes. By tightly integrating and correlating the threat information provided by Sourcefire Intrusion Sensors and Agents with the network intelligence provided by Sourcefire RNA Sensors, the Sourcefire Defense Center easily prioritizes the millions of security events to determine the most critical events to an organization's business and takes the appropriate actions. These actions follow the ABCs of Defense - Alert, Block, Correct - all in real-time to deliver the most effective security.
