SBE Introduces Advanced Security Offload Engine in Collaboration with Cavium Networks; Featuring Support for IPsec, SSL, and Wireless LAN Encryption

SAN RAMON, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Sept. 27, 2004 -- SBE Inc., (Nasdaq:SBEI), a leading supplier of high-performance OEM communications solutions, today announced that it has teamed up with Cavium Networks, the cost and performance leader in content and security processing, to deliver securePMC-L, the first in a growing series of SBE board-level encryption solutions designed to accelerate SSL, WLAN and IPsec cryptographic operations and significantly improve security, performance, and availability of Linux and other embedded applications.

A PMC-based security offload engine designed to meet FIPS 140-2 Level 3 requirements, the SBE securePMC-L is based on Cavium Networks' best-selling NITROX Lite, the industry's first security processor targeted towards IPsec, SSL and WLAN applications protocol acceleration. The heart of the NITROX Lite is the microprogrammed GigaCipher core, which allows for Macro processing, future upgrades, scalability and flexibility in supporting cryptographic operations and protocol layer functions. This unique Macro processing allows systems to offload high-level SSL, WLAN or IPsec protocol commands, thus reducing the host I/O and system processor traffic and increasing total system throughput. The NITROX Lite provides simultaneous support for multiple protocols as well as support for IPv6. Both these features are critical requirements for next generation security equipment.

"Cavium Networks' NITROX Lite security processors have been widely integrated into IPsec, SSL and WLAN applications from leading vendors at a range of price and performance points," commented Rajiv Khemani, vice president of marketing at Cavium Networks. "We're pleased to see SBE, a key player in the board-level I/O space, utilize our security processors to deliver new board options for OEM and enterprise customers. We believe that these solutions will offer our joint customers a competitive advantage in the way that they build their networks."

"The rapid changes of the information age have put increasing security demands on enterprise networks, such as VPNs, portals and corporate web sites over the last few years. With the expansion of network boundaries comes the inevitable need for effective solutions to secure these enterprise connections," stated William B. Heye, president and CEO at SBE. "Given this proliferation of established networks, expanding our extensive portfolio of I/O solutions to include a series of advanced encryption boards to enable secure data transfer, web transactions, and Internet-based communications is a natural progression for us. Integrating Cavium's award-winning NITROX security processors into our board-level encryption solution allows us to offer a robust and powerful engine for accelerating SSL, WLAN and IPsec cryptographic operations, thereby significantly improving security, performance, and availability of customer applications."

Supporting up to 1 Gbps bulk data encryption and hashing, and 7K RSA Ops, SBE's securePMC-L is engineered for seamless integration into a variety of networking equipment, including routers, switches, web servers, server load balances, firewalls, SANs, and VPN gateways. Linux drivers are available with the securePMC-L. The driver supports concurrent operation of SSL and IPsec for each core within Cavium Networks' NITROX architecture.

Availability and Pricing

The securePMC-L board is currently available. SBE's securePMC family of encryption solutions includes dual port Gigabit Ethernet copper or fiber options. PCI-X versions of these solutions are currently in development and will be available soon. Pricing varies based on configuration requirements and OEM quantities.
