Sun Microsystems Signs Worldwide Agreement With Vodafone for All Sun Products
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. , the creator and leading advocate of Java(TM) technology, today announced that Vodafone -- the world's largest mobile carrier -- has entered into a new and extensive global framework agreement with consistent terms for Sun's entire hardware, software, and services product line. This deal specifically includes extensions for the Sun Java(TM) Enterprise System and the Sun Java Desktop System and allows Vodafone to use Sun software in providing services and support to customers in over 26 countries worldwide. The Java Enterprise System is the strategic underpinning of Sun's software strategy and provides an integrated, open software system that delivers a core set of industry-leading shared enterprise network services delivered on a predictable schedule at an affordable price. The Java Desktop System is a comprehensive, secure, highly affordable enterprise desktop solution that is simple to use and works with existing infrastructure.
"With this agreement with Sun, we anticipate significant cost and synergy savings over the next few years due to reduced support and deployment costs," said Detlef Schultz, global supply chain director at Vodafone.
"The most demanding large-scale organizations are trying to simplify the integration of their infrastructure and cut costs to deliver more services to their customers over the network," said John Loiacono, executive vice president, Software, at Sun. "Vodafone represents the future -- one in which all businesses operate shared service environments, bringing together communities and employees, partners and suppliers, with a common infrastructure, a common technology model, and a common pursuit of simplicity and business opportunity."
The deal also has the potential to dramatically change the commercial software landscape for Vodafone on product deployments. Vodafone, already one of Sun's biggest users of the Java System Directory product, has also begun early evaluation of other key components from the Java Enterprise System. So far, after reviewing the business benefits associated with Sun's software products, Vodafone Operating Companies (OpCo's) in Greece, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom (UK), Ireland, and the Netherlands have purchased local licenses under the new contract.
