TELUS Deploys IP Unity to Power its IP-One Messaging Services

MILPITAS, Calif. & VANCOUVER, B.C. --(Business Wire)-- June 22, 2004 -- TELUS, the largest telecommunications carrier in western Canada, and IP Unity, the market leader in IP service solutions for blended networks, announced today that TELUS has deployed IP Unity's Harmony6000(TM) platform to serve as the voicemail and unified messaging engine for its flagship IP-One(TM) Telephony Services.

In mid-2003, TELUS became the first Canadian telecommunications provider to launch carrier-grade hosted and managed Internet Protocol (IP) Telephony Services. Since then, the company has deployed IP services to business subscribers in the nation's seven most populous provinces.

The carrier has selected and deployed IP Unity's Harmony6000 Media Server to upgrade its first generation voice messaging platform to the latest functional requirements and cost performance targets, and to rapidly migrate its voicemail subscriber base to all-IP based messaging by the end of 2004. In particular, TELUS found IP Unity uniquely suited to deliver the robust feature set, flexible APIs, and multi-language support the company needs to serve its markets.

"TELUS' innovative IP-One services provide a full suite of advanced application services, and integrated access to voicemail, email, data and images," stated Boris Koechlin, Director IP Application Development TELUS. "With IP Unity's powerful and versatile Media Server solution, we have given our business subscribers simplified and powerful access to all of these messaging modes, as well as up to 30% savings in operating expenses over earlier-generation TDM technology."

"Users can now access and manage their messages via phone or PC. They will soon enjoy a powerful set of video messaging features and speech recognition functionality to enable voice navigation and text-to-speech retrieval of email. IP Unity's advanced media processing, speech recognition, and 'many services via one platform' approach cost-effectively support these leading edge capabilities very well."

"TELUS has achieved a watershed accomplishment by being the first North American ILEC to deploy a suite of IP telephony services in its core network," emphasized IP Unity CEO Arun Sobti. "TELUS' leadership is groundbreaking. They have not only implemented an impressive Next Generation IP Network, but have also moved in parallel to deliver leading edge end-user services that integrate familiar telephony functions with new data, voice and video applications subscribers need and will pay for. IP Unity's Harmony6000 service solutions are a perfect fit for their requirements, now and in the future."
