SANsymphony Ensures High Availability Of Patient Data
DataCore Software, a provider of enterprise-class, open storage networking software, announced München-Schwabing Hospital has centralized its Storage Area Network (SAN) with DataCore's SANsymphony storage management platform. Munich's largest hospital is now benefiting from the high availability of its data and applications as well as accelerated backup processes. In addition, the hospital is able to reduce staff activity for storage management by almost 30 percent. The project has been implemented by DataCore's Elite Partner CEMA AG.
Using SANsymphony the hospital has consolidated the storage subsystems of different manufacturers within a central storage pool of 4 TB. The central management platform allocates storage capacities to applications flexibly and on demand. Through the comprehensive automation of administrative tasks and simplified handling, storage management activities have been reduced drastically. In addition, SANsymphony's huge range of functions ensures redundancy and high availability in the SAN.
"SANsymphony supports heterogeneous application and SAN platforms, allows for the integration of existing disk subsystems and offers long-term cost advantages with respect to storage expansions, since we are now able to purchase hardware independently of manufacturers," said Kosmas Schütz, director of the Service Centre for Information Systems at the Hospital München-Schwabing. "We were really convinced by the price/performance ratio of the solution: Mainframe features at client/server prices!"
Within the context of the storage consolidation project, the data backup process has also been optimized through a 'Backup to Disk' procedure. First, application data is mirrored synchronously in the SAN. Then, SANsymphony Snapshot makes a point-in-time copy of data, which can then be used for the quick restoration and tape backup without impairing server operation. Through the use of SANsymphony in combination with VMware ESX Server for server virtualization, the hospital enjoys the benefits of an extremely flexible and very fast data backup solution.
"Due to the increased digitization, healthcare companies are faced with growing data volumes creating complex storage management requirements and greater cost pressures," said Ronald Kirch, sales manager CEMA AG. "SANsymphony has proven its worth in this field, since the software offers the degree of reliability and flexibility needed by modern hospitals."
