Zotac GTX 970 AMP! Omega and GTX 980 AMP! Extreme Review [T-break Tech (Middle East)]

(T-break Tech (Middle East) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) September was an interesting month for graphics cards. AMD and its partners released the R9 285, a new GPU that performed a little better than the R9 280 but not as much as the 280X and priced in between them. Now Nvidia has come out with two new GPUs targeting the higher end of the market, the GTX 970 and 98 and Zotac was kind enough to send us a sample of each.

Zotac GTX 970 AMP! OmegaPackagingThe Zotac GTX 970 AMP! Omega comes in a box with the brand, model and features displayed on the front and more features on the back. Inside the box is another glossy black box with the card inside including manuals, driver DVD, two power splitters, a DVI adaptor and a microUSB cable for the card's OC Plus feature.

The Graphics CardThe card is of the two slot kind with two fans and a heatsink with four heatpipes underneath to dissipate heat from the GPU. The enclosure is of a grey metal and so is the backplate. Unlike AMD, Nvidia still use SLI connectors instead of the PCIe bus for any dual or quad SLI configurations. Along the side is a huge metal frame with the Zotac brand on it and the two 8-pin connectors after it. At the back there's a microUSB connector for the included cable. The cable is then attached to a free USB connector on the motherboard normally used for front panel connections. On the front I/O plate you get a DVI port, an HDMI port and three DisplayPorts.

The GTX 970 is based on Nvidia's new Maxwell GM204 GPU which offers more performance with less power consumption than the outgoing Kepler GPUs. Reference GTX 970 cards run at 1050MHz Base and 1750MHz for memory but the Zotac AMP! Omega runs at an overclocked speed of 1102MHz Base, 1204MHz Boost and 1762MHz memory. The 4GB of Samsung GDDR5 memory runs on a 256bit memory bus like the older GTX 770. The new GTX 970 and 980 cards are also Direct X 12 ready for Microsoft's upcoming Windows 10 operating system.
