Zambia calls for cooperation to combat malaria
LUSAKA, Apr 25, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) --
Zambian government has called for
closer working cooperation with the private sector and key
stakeholders in its quest to combat Malaria, Zambia News and
Information Service (ZANIS) reported on Saturday.
Lusaka District Commissioner, Christah Kalulu said that the
government has since embarked on a number of ambitious and
vigorous interventions aimed at combating the threat posed by
Malaria.
Kalulu said this on Saturday in Lusaka that this Year's
Malaria Day theme -- "Counting Malaria Out" implies that malaria
can be wiped out like small pox and polio as it is a preventable
disease. She also distributed the Insecticides Treated Mosquito
Nets to a selected households.
She appealed to residents in the area to have access to health
officials who will soon be in the area conducting residential
spraying aimed at killing the mesquites, ZANIS said.
Kalulu further urged residents to support government programs
such as the in door residual household spraying, Insecticide
Treated Nets and the Environmental Management aimed at combating
the disease.
Speaking earlier, parliament member Jean Kapata, commended the
government for exhibiting leadership in the fight against the
disease.
Kapata noted that the country has made considerable progress
in addressing the negative impact especially among the vulnerable
group to the disease, children.
She observed that the country has achieved a rapid scale up
program as evident by the 2008 Malaria Indicator survey that shows
the reduction on the impact on children by 54 percent and severe
anemia by 69 percent in a period of two years, ZANIS said.
