WTO negotiators to resume Doha Round talks next week: Schwab+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WASHINGTON, Sept. 4_(Kyodo) _ World Trade Organization members will restart a high-ranking, working-level meeting in Geneva next week with an eye to reaching an accord in the Doha Round of global trade talks by the year-end, the top U.S. trade negotiator said Thursday.

Washington has not given up on its stance of seeking to bring the round to a successful conclusion by the end of 2008, U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab said.

The Geneva talks will aim to reconfirm the positive results achieved so far in the farm trade segment of the Doha Round talks and make further headway in the area, a USTR spokesman said.

The free trade talks collapsed during a ministerial meeting in Geneva in late July after the United States clashed with China and India over the extent of easing the terms for poor countries to use the so-called special safeguard mechanism, which would allow poor countries to raise tariffs on agricultural produce in the event of an import surge.
