Write-in candidate Susan Williams wins Cumberland County School Board seat for District 5Nov 16, 2012 (The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Write -in candidate Susan Williams was declared the winner of the District 5 seat on the Cumberland County Schools Board of Education. The result of the race was announced today. Williams received 6,064 votes, according to an elections official. Charles C. Powers received 4,443 votes and Randy Fredricks received 2,727 votes. Incumbent Mary Emily Royal, who died Oct. 3, remained on the ballot. Results showed 6,067 votes were cast for Royal. Williams, a retired music teacher, said she was honored to be elected to the board. Royal's family approached Williams about running. "The family said that I was Mary Emily's choice to take it on," Williams said. "I felt like it was my sign to step up and run for the board." Williams said she wants to be the voice for the people in her district. "I want people to call me with their concerns and ideas. When I picked up the phone and talked with Mary Emily, I knew she was going to be my voice," Williams said. "I hope to continue to do that for the people in District 5." Incumbents Macky Hall and Alicia Chisolm defeated challengers in their district races. Chisolm, the vice chairwoman, received 9,523 votes and challenger Kathi Gibson received 7,784 votes in District 1. In District 6, Hall received 8,601 votes, Sheryl Lewis, 7,213 votes and H.M. "Morrie" Turner, 2,254 votes. Chairman Larry Lancaster, James A. McLauchlin and Carrie Sutton faced no opposition. The terms are four years.
