WP Engine Labs to 'Gif The Halls' of San Francisco with User-Generated 100-Foot Digital Holiday Greeting DisplayHoliday Greeting cards are a traditional part of the festive season, yet 40% of American's admit they dislike aspects of greeting cards today. WP Engine Labs will decorate the walls of San Francisco this holiday season with 100-foot projected dynamic GIFs generated and submitted from people around the world. The event is in partnership with the Gray Area Foundation and the Yerba Buena Community Benefit District. "As the technology capital of the world, San Francisco is the perfect place to inaugurate a new breed of holiday greetings; dynamically displayed messages for the whole city of San Franisco to see," said Tomás Puig, Sr. Director of Labs at WP Engine. "Combining the most dynamic WordPress content platform with user-generated art is the best way to light up San Francisco this holiday season. 88% of Americans expect a greeting card this year, but now you can blow away your loved ones by lighting up the walls of San Francisco with your message, rather than sending a boring and impersonal traditional greeting card." The projections will go live at two of the most trafficked areas of San Francisco; 687 Market St. and 785 Market St. on Saturday, December 20th at 6pm PST, running through Tuesday, December 23rd 6am PST. Greeting card submissions are free, open to the public and can be completed through a custom Gif the Halls online portal, which allows users to simply generate creative and dynamic greeting cards. WP Engine will also record the projections and send copies to those who submitted greeting cards so that everyone will get to see what their cards looked like at the moment they are projected as the city of San Francisco lives around it. Greeting card submissions are not limited to San Francisco residents, and those living in other parts of the country will receive an email with a video of their GIF as it is projected. "Through the Gif The Halls collaboration, we are exposing new audiences to digital artists who work at the exciting intersection of art and technology," said Josette Melchor, Executive Director of the Gray Area Foundation, an arts nonprofit supporting art and technology for social good. "Gif the Halls will bring holiday cheer to thousands around the world through our curated experience that breaks down the barriers between the digital and physical world." WP Engine Labs commissioned six digital artists, from the Bay Area and beyond and curated by the Gray Area Foundation, to put their own unique spin on the art of the holiday card. Users can pick their favorite art, create a personal message, and add their card to the queue to be displayed. Each projection will be captured as an animated GIF for the cards creator to share anywhere online.
