TMCNet: Worker dies from fall injuries

Worker dies from fall injuries

(Tribune-Democrat, The (Johnstown, PA) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Feb. 10--SUMMERHILL -- A construction worker from Bedford died Saturday, two days after he fell 20 feet from a roof while he was on the job in Summerhill.

A strong gust of wind lifted a 51-foot-long piece of tin sheeting that knocked Jesse Dunn, 24, off the garage roof that he and two other workers were replacing, said Jeffrey Lees, Cambria County chief deputy coroner.

Dunn, who died of severe head injuries, was transported to Memorial Medical Center's intensive care unit in Johnstown, where he was pronounced dead around 6:30 Saturday evening, Lees said.

The three workers had hoisted two 3-by-51-foot pieces of thin sheeting onto the roof when wind picked up a piece that hit all three workers. It struck Dunn in the back and he was knocked from the steepest point of the roof onto concrete below. One other worker was injured, but Dunn was the only one to fall from the roof of the garage along Gates Hill Road.

The National Weather Service reported wind gusts of up to 46 mph in that area around the time of the accident, 9:54 a.m. Thursday.

"The wind could easily get underneath that sheeting," Lees said. "That is exactly what happened."

The three construction workers were working for Corle Building Systems in Imler, Bedford County.

Lees said he ruled the death accidental but he is contacting the Occupational Safety and Health Administration about the incident. "The investigation is ongoing," Lees said.

A representative from Corle could not be reached for comment Saturday evening.

A Connecticut funeral home is handling arrangements for Dunn's family.
