Wolters Kluwer, Leading Health Plans to Discuss Critical Role of Terminology Management to Effective HIE at Annual WEDI Conference

Wolters Kluwer, a leading global provider of information for healthcare professionals and students, announced today that Brian Levy (News - Alert), M.D., its Vice President of Global Clinical Operations for Health Language, will lead a breakout session at the 24th Annual National WEDI (Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange) Conference. The session, "Overcoming Challenges to Clinical Information Exchange Through Terminology Management," covers the critical role of terminology management to the future of clinical information exchange and will take place on May 21 at 10:05 a.m. in Salt River Rooms 7 and 8 of Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Dr. Levy will be joined by Paul Gajda, Senior Manager, Provider Connectivity Solutions with Florida Blue, and Joe Miller, Director of Strategy and Innovation with AmeriHealth Caritas for an insightful look at the two health plans' journey to achieve successful bi-directional clinical information exchange with hospitals, health systems and other providers. The three executives will present a road-map for other health plans to follow in designing a terminology strategy that incorporates data normalization to support information sharing and analytics initiatives.

As the accountable care movement continues to mature, payers and providers are increasingly faced with challenges associated with semantic interoperability-the ability of two or more healthcare systems to share clinical information and use it meaningfully. Lack of a universal terminology standardexacerbates the problem, creating inevitable conflicts with terminology intake, management and distribution when clinical information is shared.

"Success within the evolving quality-driven healthcare landscape will require that payers and providers overcome challenges to data sharing and work collaboratively towards common goals," said Leo Barbaro, Vice President & General Manager, Clinical Terminologies and Surveillance, Wolters Kluwer Health, Clinical Solutions. "As payers look beyond claims data to leverage clinical data from providers, terminology management strategies and data normalization tools will be needed to support semantic interoperability and position for the future of health information exchange."

Designed to enable effective clinical information exchange, the Health Language family of products including LEAP Code Group Manager and LEAP will be featured at WEDI (Booth #2). Wolters Kluwer's enterprise terminology management platform provides the software, content, and consulting solutions needed to map, translate, update, and manage standard and enhanced clinical terminologies on an enterprise scale, enabling the information liquidity required to support such healthcare challenges as Meaningful Use compliance, ICD-10 conversion, population health management, and analytics.
