WISPA Supports FCC's Proposed 3.5 GHz Rural Spectrum Use

(PR Web Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Bluffton, IN (PRWEB) April 23, 2014 The Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (WISPA), a membership organization that promotes the development, advancement and unity of the wireless Internet service provider industry, applauds the FCC's proposal to adopt new rules that would make available up to 100 megahertz of spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band for rural broadband use.

The proposed rules, adopted earlier today in a Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, would implement a three-tiered spectrum access system to enable shared use of licensed and unlicensed spectrum, a model that represents the future of spectrum management in the U.S. and globally. Under the proposed system, spectrum use would be governed by a robust system that would protect incumbents from interference but allow other uses based on technical criteria.

"We appreciate the FCC's recognition of the need for more spectrum, both licensed and unlicensed, to help rural Americans obtain access to spectrum for fixed broadband," said Alex Phillips, FCC Committee Chair for WISPA. "The novel regulatory scheme that the FCC has proposed is supported by the record, promotes spectral efficiency and fosters innovation. We look forward to continuing to work with the FCC in the months ahead as it fashions final rules." About WISPA WISPA is a membership-driven trade association that promotes the development, advancement and unity of the wireless Internet service provider industry. WISPA has over 800 members that support WISPA's advocacy, education and other collaborative industry initiatives. For more information, visit http://www.wispa.org.
