Winter Storms All Too Rare for Sierra Businesses
TRUCKEE, Feb 13, 2012 (KTXL-TV - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Good weather, without good snow, certainly hasn't been all that good for business.
It's been a while since resorts have heard the mass clomping of the rigid ski boots of snow lovers on their way to the slopes. Christine Ward was skiing for the first time this year.
"Woke up to some nice powder. Just had to give it a try," said Ward.
The snow doesn't affect just the resorts. It also affects the neighboring rental shops, restaurants and coffee shops, like Norm Sayler's Espresso.
"You know what? Last year was a tough one too because it snowed all the time. This year it isn't snowing as much so we're kinda hit and miss on both. We did have a little better year last year than this year," said Sayler, comparing this season to last season.
Sayler also runs the Donner Summit Historical Museum. It has old skis, toboggans and pictures as well as a chart of every year's snow fall since 1879. We are on pace to have the 5th or 6th worst snowfall total ever.
But hope springs eternal for those in the sierra like Sugarbowls' Jennie Bartlett.
"You can always have one of those miracle Marches. Last year, it snowed straight into June," said Bartlett. "We're just hopeful to get some decent snowfall in the second half of the season."
