Wii tournament draws teens
Dec 16, 2008 (The Sun Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The usually quiet meeting room at the Jerry Lawrence Memorial Library in D'Iberville was filled with the sounds of home runs being hit, bowling pins being knocked over and Mario cruising to victory in his cart.
The library was set to host its first Nintendo Wii tournament but it turned out to be more of a "hang out at the library" evening.
"It was a good event to bring kids together and for them to meet other people who are different from them," said Jeffery Clark, 14, of D'Iberville.
Clark and others spent their time playing the two Nintendo Wii gaming consoles or grabbing a bite to eat at the food table; a few played board games at a table set up in the library.
"I would like for the library to do it again," Clark said.
The Nintendo Wii is an interactive gaming console that allows gamers to use its controller to swing at tennis balls, hurl bowling balls down a virtual alley and many other things while actually making the physical motions of the action they are performing.
Beef O'Brady's in D'Iberville provided food for the teens; the D'Iberville Wal-Mart and D'Iberville Gamestop contributed gift cards for a raffle.
"It was a great success," said librarian Missy Lucas, one of the organizers of the event.
"We had a very good turnout."
About 60 teens made their way into the room at different times during the two-hour event, Lucas said.
The library plans to host more events geared toward teens in the near future.
