WGU and Salt Lake Bees Award Four Students Tuition for One Year

SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Western Governors University (WGU) and the Salt Lake Bees teamed up to grant scholarships worth a year's tuition to four local students prior to Friday's game for Salt Lake's Triple-A baseball team. Scholarship recipients Tyler Roberts, Oscar Gonzales, Jocelyn Jensen, and Richard Schultz were awarded the scholarships by WGU's Chief Marketing Officer Patrick Partridge and mascot, Sage the Night Owl, on the field at Smith's Ballpark.

Each of the winners is currently enrolled at WGU and submitted an official entry form earlier in the season. Roberts is working toward his master's degree in accounting, Gonzales is earning his master's degree in educational leadership, Jensen is getting her bachelor's degree in nursing, and Schultz is on his way to completing his bachelor's degree in business management.

"I watched my son go through his first term in the same degree program at WGU, and he was really thriving. That inspired me to go back and get my bachelor's degree. Originally, we were racing to see who finished their bachelor's first, but I lost that bet, and now he's onto his master's with WGU!" said Schultz, who works full time for Discover Financial Services while working towards finishing his degree.

The majority of WGU students are working adults who benefit from WGU's flexibility and competency-based online courses, which allow students to advance through their programs as soon as they're able to demonstrate mastery of the material. This, combined with low tuition of $6,000 a year for most programs, is helping more working adults go back to school, including more than 4,200 Utahns among the nationwide student body of 60,000.

Online, nonprofit WGU offers more than 50 bachelor's and master's degrees in business, K-12 teacher education, information technology, and health professions, including nursing. For more information about WGU, visit www.wgu.edu.
