WGL Sponsors Maryland Science Bowl at Montgomery College for a Third Year

(Cision Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Montgomery College is pleased to announce that for the third straight year, WGL has stepped forward as the major sponsor of the 2014 Maryland Science Bowl. The contest will be held on January 18, 2014, at Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus, located at 51 Mannakee Street, Rockville, Md.

In addition to its $5,000 sponsorship gift, WGL has pledged as many as 40 volunteers, including company President and Chief Operating Officer, Adrian Chapman, who also will address students prior to the competition.

“We are pleased to support this important community and educational event at Montgomery College,” Chapman said. “WGL has made it a priority to support the development of math, science, technology and business skills in young people.” The 2014 Maryland Science Bowl is aquiz-styleacademic competition. High school teams of four to five students answer questions focused on astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, general science, mathematics and physics. The round-robin competition culminates in a final match between the top two teams. The winning team advances to the National Science Bowl sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, held in Washington, D.C.

“We believe it is essential that students are aware of the career paths that are open to them in these diverse fields,” added Chapman. “For example, they may not know that WGL is involved in work to develop and implement green technologies.” Montgomery College is hosting the Maryland Science Bowl for the eighth year and participation from across the state is expected to be greater than ever. Organizers anticipate that approximately 28 high schools will bring between 45 and 48 teams. Last year, 43 teams competed from 26 high schools including Baltimore City and Allegheny, Charles, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George’s, St. Mary’s and Washington counties.

“WGL’s strong commitment to the Maryland Science Bowl and its generous sponsorship support mean a lot to Montgomery College,” said Dr. DeRionne Pollard, president of Montgomery College. “This friendly competition fosters academic achievement among students from schools across the state, and it nurtures an interest in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers that are so important to the economic development of Maryland.” Call for Volunteers The Fund for Montgomery has included the 2014 Maryland Science Bowl as an official volunteer option for Montgomery County residents during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service weekend.
