WeatherBug and KAKE Team Up to Bring Real-time, Local Weather to Wichita

Viewers in Wichita, and most of Kansas, tuning to their preferred station for local news are now seeing real-time weather from sensors in and around the city, and across the state, thanks to a new partnership with KAKE and WeatherBug.

KAKE, the ABC affiliate based in Wichita, is the only multi-station television network in the Wichita/Hutchinson Plus market, covering most of Kansas, which can exclusively tap into the WeatherBug (News - Alert) weather and camera sensor network. This vast network includes thousands of weather sensors across the U.S. and Kansas, including several in Greater Wichita at places such as the Kansas Aviation Museum, the Minneha Core Knowledge Magnet School, Oatville Elementary School, Kingman Elementary and Middle School, El Dorado High School and Maize High School. There's even a WeatherBug weather sensor at KAKE's studios.

"People who call KAKEland home know that our weather can be extreme -- from the sometimes violent spring here in tornado alley, then summer temperatures that can soar into the 100s with high humidity, followed by bitterly cold winters with subfreezing temperatures," says KAKE First Alert's Jay Prater, Managing Meteorologist and Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM). "Live, neighborhood weather conditions from WeatherBug will provide KAKEland's viewers with the best hyper-local, most up to date, weather data available."

WeatherBug operates the world's largest real-time weather observin and lightning detection networks. WeatherBug sensors are placed right where people live and work - including thousands of K-12 schools, universities, parks, golf courses and public buildings.

KAKE WeatherBug Schools Program: Schools in Wichita, and all across KAKEland, are invited to join the WeatherBug Schools Program to have their weather information and images shared on-air. Data from the school's weather station also supports STEM initiatives in the classroom. Combined with severe weather alerting, the weather sensors provide school faculty and staff with critical information to make important safety and transportation-related decisions.
