Weather station added in Metcalfe
EDMONTON, Nov 13, 2009 (Glasgow Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Metcalfe County now has a Kentucky Mesonet station.
The station, which is located near Edmonton, recently went online and monitors weather and climate conditions, which can be useful information when determining if severe weather patterns are approaching.
"It gives real-time weather in five minute (increments)," said Emory Kidd, emergency management director. "It can help us monitor rainfall for the possibility of flooding and the barometric pressure will help us know when weather fronts are moving in."
The information can be useful in helping the county prepare for any weather-related disaster, he said.
The Metcalfe County Mesonet station is one of three such stations that recently went online. The others are at Fulton County High School in Hickman and in Harrison County on private land near the Licking River Valley eight miles north of Cynthiana.
"We are extremely pleased to have these new stations operating as part of the Kentucky Mesonet," said Stuart Foster, director of the Mesonet and Kentucky Climate Center at Western Kentucky University. "These sites will provide valuable data to assist National Weather Service meteorologists in producing forecasts and severe weather warnings, and will also provide benefits to a wide range of interests in the local area."
The first Mesonet station went online at WKU's farm in Warren County in May 2007. Since then 38 stations have been installed across the state progressing toward a goal of 100 stations.
In addition to rainfall and barometric pressure, the stations also monitor temperature, humidity, solar radiation and wind speed and direction. The data is transmitted to the Kentucky Climate Center at WKU every five minutes, 24 hours a day, throughout the year and the information retrieved by those sites is available online at www.kymesonet.org
