WB to help Tajikistan appraise Rogun power plant
(Interfax News Agency Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)DUSHANBE. April 19 (Interfax) - The World Bank is to select an independent company to examine infrastructure at Rogun Hydroelectric Plant in Tajikistan and choose the type of dam, Russian Aluminum and the Tajik Energy Ministry said in a joint press release.
"In accordance with agreements, to appraise incomplete construction by the company Lahmeyer, and also the draft parameters of a feasibility study prepared by TashGidroproyekt in 2000 and the parameters proposed by Lahmeyer, an independent company, recommended by the World Bank, will be invited," the press release said.
RusAl, which announced its readiness to invest in completing the Rogun Hydroelectric Plant in fall 2004, is insisting on a concrete dam. The Tajik Energy Ministry believes that the dam should be a rock-fill dam, in line with the Soviet design of the project. Rogun Hydroelectric Plant should be the largest hydro plant in Central Asia.
"RusAl and the Energy Ministry believe that when building complicated hydro-technical infrastructure, additional consultation, especially from authoritative international organizations like the World Bank, is a guarantee of the reliability and safety of future technical solutions and indicates the interest of the sides in selecting the best solutions for the project," the press release said. rd
