Water line extension project dedicated

EDMOND, Nov 24, 2009 (The Fayette Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Dozens of residents, local and state officials, contractors and engineers were on hand Friday to celebrate the completion of a water line extension project ongoing since March that will benefit 64 Fayette County families.

The $1.925 million project for the Beauty Mountain, Power Plant Road and Shawver Bridge Road area was a public-private partnership involving the New Haven Public Service District, the Fayette County Commission and West Virginia American Water.

Among those in attendance at the ceremony were Beauty Mountain residents Sylvia Hardy and her son, Russell Schinck, who previously had to rely on well water that Schinck says was contaminated by E. coli.

Numerous project customers have experienced either poor quality well water or inadequate well supplies for many years.

"It's a Godsend," Schinck said of the water line extension project. "I just want to thank everyone involved in getting this done." Funding sources for the project included the state Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council (an $802,000 loan and a $138,940 grant), the state Department of Environmental Protection's Abandoned Mine Lands Program ($925,418 grant), and West Virginia American Water ($59,000).

Stafford Consulting provided engineering services.

"Every family should have easy access to clean drinking water," said Fayette County Commission President Ken Eskew. "But unfortunately, many communities have to rely on wells or must haul their water in on trucks. This project allows residents the ease of getting dependable water straight from the faucet." "We were very pleased to extend water service to these folks on Beauty Mountain," Eskew added. "We'll just keep chipping away at providing water." "People here said they'd probably never see this happen in their lifetime," said Kenny Hayes, chairman of the New Haven PSD. "And today we're dedicating this new water line. Now for the first time, the residents here can turn on their spigots and have confidence in the quality of the water that comes out." The project, which involved approximately 27,000 feet of pipe, got under way in March and was completed last week. The project also included the installation of 18 fire hydrants, which should not only help protect residents' property from fire but should also help lower their insurance rates.

"West Virginia American Water takes pride in being able to provide quality, dependable water service and fire protection to our friends and neighbors throughout the state. However, without the support of local and state officials, we would not be able to take on projects such as this. We would not be able to extend service to areas that would otherwise have no access to treated water," said Wayne Morgan, WVAW president. "Everyone involved in this project -- the residents who got the process started, the government officials who obtained the funding, and the contractors and engineers who carried out the plans -- should be commended for a job well done." West Virginia American Water, a wholly owned subsidiary of American Water, is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing water services to approximately 600,000 people.
