Ward elected airport board chairman [Messenger-Inquirer, Owensboro, Ky.](Messenger-Inquirer (Owensboro, KY) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sept. 17--Dr. Andrew Ward, who has served on the Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport Board of Directors for more than 15 years, was elected chairman Tuesday night at the board's monthly meeting at the airport terminal. Ward, who was serving as vice chairman, will serve through June when the 10-member board will elect officers for another year. He replaces Ray Assmar, who had served more than 13 years on the board and six as its chairman. Assmar officially resigned his appointment last month. He said the time was right for him to leave the board citing demands of his work and family. Ward is an optometrist with Advantage Eye Care in Owensboro. He also is a pilot with a passion for aviation. "Fewer things are closer to my heart than this airport," Ward said Tuesday night in accepting the board chairman post. "I've known several of the past board chairs including Ray and Brenda (Clayton) who have been among the best. I will try to fill their shoes." In recent years, the board and airport Director Bob Whitmer have boosted the airport's profile and its usage with an extended runway, now at 8,000 feet, expanded and renovated terminal, and other improvements. The board also unanimously elected Clay Ford of E.M. Ford and Co. as vice chairman. The city of Owensboro and Daviess Fiscal Court appoint five members each to the airport board. Judge-Executive Al Mattingly is set to ask Fiscal Court to approve Barry Frey to fill out Assmar's term. Other board members are Brenda Clayton, treasurer; Bart Darrell; Wayne Foster; Peggy Gardner; Adam Hancock; Marty Traylor; and Jerry Yeiser.
