Vonage(R) Now Provides Emergency 911 Service in Over 2100 Calling Centers Across the Nation
HOLMDEL, N.J., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Vonage Marketing, a subsidiary of Vonage Holdings Corp., a leading provider of broadband phone service, today announced that it has turned on emergency 911 service in over 2100 PSAPs across the country. In just one week, Vonage equipped an additional 95 calling centers, in over 40 new counties, with 911 calling capabilities.
In June, the FCC gave Vonage, and all Internet-based phone service companies, 120 days to create an E911 system from scratch, and provide all of its customers, wherever they are in the U.S., with E911 service. In that amount of time, Vonage worked closely with local 911 centers, also known as Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs), across the country to turn on E911 for as many customers as it could.
"In just over a month, we have turned up E911 service in over 200 counties and 430 PSAPs across the nation," said Jeffrey A. Citron, Vonage's Chairman and CEO. "Our goal is to get every Vonage customer help when they need it, and we will continue working with the FCC, regulators, Congress and public safety until there is equal access to E911 for Vonage customers."
"When we started working with Vonage this past July, E911 service for VoIP customers was almost non-existent in Maryland," said Gordon Deans, Executive Director of Maryland's Emergency Number Systems Board. "Nonetheless, Vonage began an aggressive E911 implementation program in our state, and as E911 routing and testing was conducted, we found that Vonage's E911 testing process thoroughly addressed our concerns, while having minimal or no impact on the emergency operations of Maryland's primary PSAPs. In fact, the Vonage VoIP E911 testing process was so responsive that it has become the standard for future testing in Maryland."
Since January 10th, Vonage has added more than 90 PSAPs in the following counties -- bringing the total number of calling centers with emergency 911 service to over 2100:
