Vivendi may buy Orascom Telecom's Algerian unit
(M&A Navigator Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) French telecommunications and media group Vivendi (EPA:VIV) may be targeting the Algerian unit of Egypt's mobile telecomms company Orascom Telecom (CAI:ORTE), French daily La Tribune said on Friday.
The paper wrote that Mehdi Dazi, member of Vivendi's board, was in Algiers last Saturday to meet with local businessmen including Issad Rebrab, head of Algerian Cevital group, which owns 3% in Orascom Telecom Algeria.
Cevital may join Vivendi in the bid for the Algerian telecomms operator serving over 14 million mobile customers, the paper added.
Vivendi has provided no comment.
Vivendi, which already controls Maroc Telecom (CAS:IAM), had said it planned to expand in emerging markets.
The French group bought earlier this month Brazilian broadband operator GVT (SAO:GVTT3) for EUR2.8bn (USD4.2bn).
