Virginia Beach man charged in five bank robberies


Mar 24, 2012 (The Virginian-Pilot - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- VIRGINIA BEACH -- Police spotted a man leaving a bank today who matched the description of a bank robber and followed.

Moments later, that bank reported it was robbed, Virginia Beach police said in a news release.

Police said they spotted the man as he was exiting the Wells Fargo Bank in the 4200 block of Holland Road today about 2 p.m. The bank reported the robbery at 2:11 p.m.

The robber had entered the bank, waited in line for a few minutes and then when he approached the counter, he handed the teller a note demanding money. The teller complied and the robber fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.

Police officers followed the man as dispatchers broadcast the report of the robbery.



Leonard Harrison Teagle of Virginia Beach was taken into custody without incident a short distance from the bank by a team of officers, a police news release said.

The 54-year-old man was charged with five counts each of robbery and wearing a mask in the commission of a felony. He was being held without bond at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center.


He was also charged in four other bank robberies: Jan, 30 at the Wells Fargo Bank in the 2600 block of Virginia Beach Blvd.; Feb. 7 at the Wells Fargo Bank in the 600 block of Independence Blvd. and the BB&T in the 6000 block of Indian River Road; and Feb. 23 at the Wells Fargo Bank in the 300 block of Little Neck Road.
