Vietnam warns mothers of child malnutrition
(Thai Press Reports Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Section: Regional News - The Health Ministry has warned that malnutrition still hits about one-third of under five children despite improved living conditions and public health care.
The latest report by the ministry showed that 28.4 percent of children were underweight, 32 percent were listed as stunted, while 34.1 percent and 10 percent suffered from iron and vitamin A deficiency, respectively.
The situation should ring alarm bells for mothers, who often lack childcare knowledge, said health workers.
Expectant mothers now enjoy free immunisation against tetanus and receive iron supplement pills while children up to six years old are vaccinated against six child killers, including tuberculosis, measles, tetanus, diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough. Young mothers are also educated in basic child raising. Therefore, public healthcare should not be to blame, said medical workers.
Many young mothers from wealthy families let house maids fully take care of their children while some others refuse to breastfeed in fear of beauty damage, criticised medical workers. - VNA
