Video Transport over 10G Ethernet Fiber from Macnica Obsoletes Copper Wiring in TV Studios

SAN DIEGO --(Business Wire)--

Macnica Americas today announced immediate availability of the MAI3140, the first in their family of devices for transportation of high definition video over 10G Ethernet. The device allows transportation of up to 8 channels of high definition video streams (SDI, HD-SDI or 3G-SDI) over a standard 10Gb Ethernet network on a single fiber optic strand. The data can be switched and transmitted using standard, commercially available Ethernet equipment with no dedicated copper co-ax wiring required.

The MAI3140 is fully compliant to the recently released SMPTE2022 5/6 standard that defines how video is transported over 10GbE. Forward Error Correction (FEC) is included in the specification and in the device, allowing lossless transmission of the video. This is important to allow for the lossy nature of standard Ethernet networks due to noise, EMI interference and other external interferences that cause dropped packets as part of normal operation.

The MAI3140 is available in both a 'trasmit' and a 'receive' variant. The transmit device encapsulates video in 10GbE packets and also calculates FEC packets and weaves those into the data stream. The receive device unpacks the video data and performs error correction to fully recover the video stream with no dropped frames or stuttering.

Applications for the device include video switching inside broadcast studios, remote surveillance systems and remote surgical video transmission. Use of standard Ethernet technology to switch video dramatically reduces the cost of switching equipment and building cabling needs, replacing copper co-ax bundles with single fiber optic strands, as well as improving quality and reliability of the video stream.
