Verizon 'Give Back Day' will benefit OASIS

Feb 15, 2012 (Messenger-Inquirer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- OASIS may receive up to $5,000 in donations from Verizon on Saturday's "Give Back Day" at Wireless Zone, 5035 Frederica St.

OASIS is an Owensboro women's shelter.

Wireless Zone will donate $10 for every phone purchased, and Wireless Zone will add another $10 for every old phone donated throughout February. Phones that are no longer used will go into Verizon's phone recycling program called HopeLine.

"It's going to help us as far as meeting some basic needs," said OASIS Director Jill Faulkner. "A lot of the funding sources we have now are more program- or initiative-driven, and that doesn't give us a lot of money for operational-type stuff.

"It's a crucial need right now to get unrestricted money." Faulkner said the donation, depending on its size, can meet clients' specific needs, such as medicine, as well as any number of needs.

"Regardless of how large or small it is, it will be put to good use," Faulkner said.

HopeLine collects old phones, batteries and accessories in any condition from any carrier and refurbishes, sells or recycles the phones. It donates the proceeds to domestic violence prevention and treatment organizations in the form of cash grants and prepaid Verizon Wireless phones for survivors. In 2011, Verizon Wireless donated $100,000 to such organizations in Kentucky.

"Our hope is that area residents who might be thinking about buying a new wireless device or donating one they no longer use will take advantage of this opportunity to help reduce the domestic violence problem we face in Kentucky and southern Indiana," said Christopher Jourdan, owner of the Wireless Zone franchise in Owensboro, Henderson and Evansville.

Donations will also go to Henderson's Children's Advocacy Center and Evansville's Holly's House.
