Van Hollen Announces $15 Million Grant for Maryland Community Colleges to Train Workers for Jobs in Cyber-Security

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ROCKVILLE, Md., Sept. 29 -- Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md. (8th CD), issued the following news release: Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen today announced that the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has awarded a $14,957,899 grant to the Cyber-Technology Pathways Across Maryland Consortium (CPAM), which consists of 14 of Maryland's 16 community colleges. As part of CPAM, Montgomery College in Rockville will receive $5,371,743 to help equip workers with the skills needed to obtain jobs in Maryland's large cyber-security industry. Congressman Van Hollen urged the DOL to approve the grant in a letter to Labor Secretary Thomas Perez in July.

The grant is made possible by DOL's Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training initiative.

"I supported this important grant so Marylanders have every tool possible to gain employment in the important and well-paying field of cyber-security, which has a high demand for specialized skills," said Congressman Van Hollen. "Montgomery College will use this funding to help workers who are negatively impacted by harmful trade practices, veterans, and underrepresented populations to pursue new careers, helping our entire economy." CPAM will prepare Marylanders for careers such as Network Support Specialists, Web Developers, and Information Security Analysts. Programs are geared toward Trade Adjustment Assistance workers, veterans, and the un- and under-employed, with a special emphasis on bringing women and underrepresented populations into the field.
