(BioWorld Today Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) , of Halle, Germany, received U.S. Patent No. 7,371,404, titled "Amphoteric liposomes and their use." It covers Smarticles, which are fully charged reversible liposomes for the in vivo delivery of nucleotides such as siRNA or antisense to targeted cells.
Oncolytics Biotech Inc., of Calgary, Alberta, was granted U.S. Patent No. 7,374,752, titled "Reovirus for the Treatment of Cellular Proliferative Disorders," which covers pharmaceutical compositions comprising various recombinant reoviruses.
Orexigen Therapeutics Inc., of San Diego, was issued U.S. Patent No. 7,375,111, which broadly covers sustained release compositions of buproprion and naltrexone combined in a single dosage form. Those drugs are the active ingredients in Contrave, Orexigen's lead obesity product.
Peregrine Pharmaceuticals Inc., of Tustin, Calif., was issued U.S. Patent Nos. 7,378,386 and 7,384,909, which grant the company broad antiviral method claims using a range of phosphatidylethanolamine binding agents, including PE-binding peptides attached to antiviral agents, as well as those conjugated to antibodies or other substances.
Pharmasset Inc., of Princeton, N.J., received a notice of allowance for a patent application, titled "Modified Fluorinated Nucleoside Analogues," which covers the composition of matter of a family of molecules for treating hepatitis C virus, including PSI-6130 and the active metabolite of PSI-7851.
Pipex Pharmaceuticals Inc., of Ann Arbor, Mich., was issued U.S. Patent No. 7,345,020, titled "Mimetics of CD4 That Inhibit Immune Responses." It covers new chemical entities relating to inhibitors of the CD4 T-cell receptor.
Provectus Pharmaceuticals Inc., of Knoxville, Tenn., received a patent covering radiosensitizer agents based on PH-12, the company's analogue of PV-10 and PH-10, which is designed to enhance the effectiveness of radiation therapy.
Samaritan Pharmaceuticals, of Las Vegas, received U.S. Patent No. 7,354,906 B2, titled "Composition of Anti-HIV drugs and Anti-Cortisol compounds and Methods for Decreasing the Side Effects of Anti-HIV drugs in Humans."
Stem Cell Therapeutics Corp., of Calgary, Alberta, received U.S. Patent No. 7,393,830, titled "Prolactin induced increase in neural stem cells numbers." It covers the use of Prolactin to treat neurodegenerative diseases.
TapImmune Inc., of Vancouver, British Columbia, was issued U.S. Patent No. 7,378,087, titled "Method of Enhancing an Immune Response." It claims methods for enhancing the immune response to tumor cells by introducing the TAP molecule into the infected cells.
Ziopharm Oncology Inc., of New York, received notices of allowance for two patents covering claims for various organic arsenic compounds, including purified crystalline darinaparsin, glycolic arsenicals and the oral pharmaceutical composition of an organic arsenic compound, and their use in cancer.
