U.S. patent creates new market opportunities for Mitec Telecom

MONTREAL, Nov. 27 /CNW Telbec/ - Mitec Telecom (TSX: MTM), a leading designer and manufacturer of mobile wireless, fixed wireless, broadcast and satellite components, has received a U.S. patent for its solid-state power amplifier technology from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
The technology, which was acquired by Mitec through the purchase of Keragis Corporation in 2007, enables use of high-powered amplifiers in compact structures. "This patent will create opportunities for us in the military, security, radar and satellite industries," said Mitec CEO Dan Piergentili. "It represents a significant milestone for Mitec."
Historically, tube-based technology has been the standard in high-powered amplifiers; however solid state technology is a sought-after alternative because it produces amplifiers that are highly reliable and extremely compact in contrast to tube-based amplifiers. High power amplifiers are an essential component used in military aircraft, tanks and humvees as well as many command and control stations, which require radio frequency communication or radar.
"Our new patent positions Mitec well to take advantage of market opportunities for solid state amplifiers," said Piergentili. According to ABI Research, an independent market research firm focused on emerging technology in the consumer and business markets, the current traveling wave tube market (TWT) for amplifiers is approaching $1 billion annually.
Mitec's patented solid state amplifier technology is currently being integrated into the Corporation's very small aperture (VSAT) product line.
