U.S. Cellular expands 3G coverage

U.S. Cellular announced Thursday it has expanded its 3G coverage in Oklahoma.
Customers in Enid and other major cities in Oklahoma that lie within U.S. Cellular's network have or will automatically receive the 3G network.
"The expansion is building off our previous launch," said Kevin Long, engineer at U.S. Cellular. "We had launched a 3G broadband (network) in Tulsa over a year ago, back in 2008, and had expanded that around Tulsa.
"The most recent launch includes the rest of the network in Oklahoma."
Cities including Oklahoma City, Ponca City, Durant and Altus, in addition to Enid, now are covered in the network.
According to a press release from U.S. Cellular, downloads on U.S. Cellular smartphones will have average speeds of 768 Kbps, while uploads will have an average speed of 200 Kbps.
The increase in speed is comparable to going from dial-up to DSL on a computer, the press release stated.
According to the press release, U.S. Cellular customers also will have access to new data and applications on their smartphones, including mobile e-mail, an advanced mobile Web browser, 3D games and MobiTV, which include channels like ABC News, ESPN and TLC.
Long said U.S. Cellular customers should receive the 3G network automatically.
"Customers who have compatible devices should automatically get the 3G broadband," he said. "If they're looking for a device, the best thing to do is visit a U.S. Cellular store."
