UPPI (News - Alert) LLC (United Pharmacy Partners) is proud to announce that thirty-one (31) nuclear pharmacy members and affiliates have received a Recognition Award from the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) from Assistant Deputy Administrator Peter H. As part of the "UPPI LEU Walk" campaign, this effort helps to accelerate uptake of supplies of molybdenum 99-derived medical imaging products produced without highly enriched uranium (HEU). Mo-99 is the parent isotope of technenium-99m, the "workhorse" isotope used in about 80% nuclear diagnostic imaging procedures. This supports the Department of Energy efforts to reduce the use of HEU - which could be used in a nuclear device - and stablish domestic production of molybdenum-99 without the use of HEU to improve the supply of medical radioisotopes, as codified in the American Medical Isotopes Production Act of 2012. UPPI radiopharmacies have been working with hospitals and imaging centers to embrace the transition to reliable, LEU-based sources of medical isotopes.
