UnitedHealth unveils patient info service for MDs

(Associated Press Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) UnitedHealth Group's Optum business is becoming the latest company to launch a service so doctors can share information about patients over the Internet.

The system, known as cloud computing, involves storing information and software applications on remote servers that are accessed through a secure Internet connection.

In health care, this means a doctor does not have to go to a particular computer for patient information or care updates. He or she can use portable devices like smart phones or tablet computers.

Insurers and providers have been pushing to improve coordination to reduce wasteful spending and make care better. Experts say cloud computing has become more common in health care the past couple years.

UnitedHealth is the largest U.S. health insurer. Its Optum business provides technology outsourcing, among other services.
