United Way, Coastal Carolina University share playbook on event's future
Feb 15, 2012 (The Sun News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A limit on the number of football players at Coastal Carolina University who could participate in a United Way event at Horry County kindergarten classes Tuesday forced the nonprofit organization to cancel the event.
"It was a very hard decision for us to make," said Julie Kopnicky, marketing and communications director for the United Way of Horry County.
The event, Caring for Kindergarteners, had planned for Chanticleer players and coaches to visit 128 classes on Valentine's Day. The university said 57 of 74 players on the football roster could participate, but they would have been unable to get to all the classes in one day.Eddie Dyer, CCU executive vice president, said the university has fewer players on its roster this year than in years past and fewer of them are eligible to miss classes for things such as visits to Horry kindergarten classes.
"They usually have a lot more than that, is my understanding," he said.
As an alternate, the university offered to send players to some classrooms on a different day.
Kopnicky said CCU was very cooperative with United Way. Visits were to be at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. and it was hoped that all classes could get a football player to visit at one or the other of those times. When she learned Monday afternoon that would not be possible, she said, "Changing it at that time was not going to be an option."
But she and the university both look forward to fielding the event in the future.
"On our part, there are no hard feelings," Kopnicky said. "The schools were very understanding and want to do it again."
The university feels the same, Dyer said.
"We would jump at the opportunity," he said, "to have the same event in the future."
