United States : TechNet Applauds Passage of Calif. Computer Science Bill [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TechNet, the bipartisan policy and political network of innovation economy CEOs and senior executives, today issued the following statement after AB1764, a TechNet-sponsored bill to encourage California school districts to expand computer science courses, passed the legislature. The bill now heads to California Governor Jerry Brown for signature.

Andrea Deveau, California Executive Director of TechNet, a sponsor of AB 1764, said: In California, innovation is transforming our economy and creating a generation of jobs that will require a specific set of skills and training. While the demand for computer science graduates is stronger than ever before, it continues to dramatically outpace the number of degrees earned.

This is particularly acute in California, where less than 10 percent of students have access to computer science education. If left unaddressed, California will face a real shortage of workers without the skills necessary to succeed in the 21st century.

The good news is we can reverse this trend and do something to prepare California students for the future. The passage of today s legislation has the potential to be a game changer for students, educators and employers, and can serve as a model for other states around the country seeking to develop and integrate computer science and STEM programs into school curriculum.

The legislation relies on the University of California and California State University as partners in establishing the guidelines and requirements for computer science courses, and we encourage the universities to define computer science in a way that incorporates the broadest range of educational training needed by the technology industry.

TechNet was proud to lead the charge on this historic education measure, and is grateful for the leadership of Assemblymembers Olsen and Buchanan who guided this critical initiative through the process. We urge Governor Brown to swiftly sign the measure.

AB 1764 allows school districts to award students credit for one mathematics course if they successfully complete one course in computer science approved by the University of California and/or the California State University as a C requirement. Such credit would only be offered in districts where the school district requires more than two courses in mathematics for graduation.
