United States : SGI Awarded Contract to Advance Department of Defense Supercomputing Capabilities [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SGI, a global leader in high performance solutions for compute, data analytics and data management, today announced that the Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded SGI a supercomputer contract as part of a technology insertion for their High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP). The contract, part of the DoD's ongoing initiative to improve HPC resources, is intended to bolster the compute capabilities of the DoD Supercomputing Resource Center (DSRC) at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), to improve mission-critical research and drive innovation throughout the United States Armed Forces.

The HPCMP was implemented to help the DoD analyze and overcome its most significant challenges, to improve how the DoD operates through the research of new theories, and to acquire new technology with real-time analysis of critical information to enable more informed decisions. HPC technology allows for the DoD Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E) community to have unparalleled access to insights that would be too costly, dangerous or time-intensive to gather through traditional means.

The ERDC DSRC will deploy an SGI ICE X supercomputer and an SGI InfiniteStorage 5600 high performance storage system, allowing DoD researchers to conduct crucial research at ERDC, specializing in the Tri-Service Reliance areas of civil engineering, environmental quality and environmental science. "We are excited to once again partner with SGI. With a theoretical peak performance of 4.6 Petaflops, the SGI ICE X system will triple the ERDC DSRC's current compute capability," said Bobby Hunter, Director of the ERDC DSRC. "This increased capability will provide the DoD's RDT&E communities with the resources needed to meet their ever-growing demand for HPC as they work to provide superior defense capabilities for the DoD." ERDC will deploy an ICE X HPC system, utilizing the latest Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 product family to achieve peak compute power. The deployment also includes 12 petabytes of storage through an SGI InfiniteStorage 5600 based on NetApp E-Series technology, running Intel® Enterprise Edition for Lustre software to allow for faster access to crucial information. At 4.6 Petaflops, the SGI system will be the fastest unclassified supercomputer in the DoD. ERDC's Technology Insertion 2014 (TI-14) SGI system will be installed in a new datacenter that is part of a $16.8 million state-of-the-art facility at the ERDC Information Technology Laboratory in Vicksburg, MS.
