United Arab Emirates : Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network members organise a campaign to fight world hunger [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry s Sustainability Network members, in cooperation with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), took part in a Rice Bowl Challenge to raise awareness amongst employees on the issue of hunger and mobilise funds for WFP in the fight against world hunger on World Food Day.

The Rice Bowl Challenge was a call to corporates to replace their regular lunch with a bowl of plain rice for the day. It was carried out under the umbrella of Eat and Feed a fundraising initiative by the Al Aroud Group a member of the Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network.

The staff members of each participating company were asked to donate a minimum of AED10 for a bowl of rice to replace their lunch. Companies were also encouraged to match the money raised by employees to double the fundraising total. 9 companies including Unilever, Dulsco, SamTech Middle East, UAE Exchange, Apparel Group, Blossom Nursery, CHEP Middle East, MBC Group and Al Rostamani Pegel participated in the initiative and raised AED 33,313 by engaging 1,694 employees.

The funds collected will go to the WFP to provide food assistance to families most in need across the Middle East. According to the WFP a total of 842 million people in the world do not have enough to eat, one in eight people do not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life, while 66 million primary school-age children attend classes hungry across the developing world.

It requires only AED 1 to feed a child a nutritious meal, AED 200 for providing school meals to an underprivileged child for an academic year and AED 300 providing emergency food assistance to a Syrian family for a month.

The WFP calculates that US$3.2 billion is needed per year to reach all 66 million hungry school children. The WFP is the world s largest humanitarian organisation addressing hunger and promoting food security.

The Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network has 58 members, organised into business-driven and action-oriented task groups with the objective to address CSR and sustainability challenges within the UAE. The task groups serve as a multi-stakeholder platform to discuss and exchange CSR/sustainability views and practices.

The Centre for Responsible Business was formed in 2004 and celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. It plays an important role in instilling a culture of responsible business in the UAE. The Centre assists Dubai Chamber members to apply responsible business practices that enhance their performance and competitiveness. It also provides research, training and events related to the concept of corporate social responsibility while raising the profile of Dubai as a sustainable business destination.
