UN Foundation Board: Now is the Time for Bold Ambitions and Actions in Support of a More Peaceful, Prosperous World

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WASHINGTON, Oct. 24 -- The United Nations Foundation issued the following news release: Joining the world in marking the 69th annual "United Nations Day," the United Nations Foundation Board of Directors highlighted the importance of the UN's role in the global community and called on people, sectors, and countries everywhere to support its work.

The UN Foundation Board of Directors said: "Let 'we the peoples of the United Nations' unite as we did 69 years ago and renew our commitment to the work of the UN and to a world of peace, justice, and opportunity for all.

"In this time of great challenge and opportunity, the UN's role as a forum for global cooperation has never been more essential to advancing peace and progress. As the international community grapples with problems that transcend borders - from disease outbreaks to climate change to terrorism - the UN provides an indispensable venue for countries, communities, and citizens to find common solutions and deepen collaboration.

"As we head into 2015, when the global community will discuss a new climate agreement and a new agenda to build on the Millennium Development Goals, we have the chance to come together at the UN to expand opportunity, improve millions of lives, and protect the health of the planet. Now is the time for all of us to be bold in our ambitions and our actions for a more peaceful, prosperous world." The members of the UN Foundation Board of Directors are: Founder and Chairman Ted Turner (United States); Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah (Jordan); Kofi Annan (Ghana); Fabio Barbosa (Brazil); Gro Harlem Brundtland (Norway); Igor Ivanov (Russia); N.R. Narayana Murthy (India); Hisashi Owada (Japan); Emma Rothschild (United Kingdom); Nafis Sadik (Pakistan); Timothy E. Wirth (United States); Andrew Young (United States); Yuan Ming (China); and Muhammad Yunus (Bangladesh).

In recognition of UN Day, members of the United Nations Association of the USA (http://www.unausa.org/membership/una-usa-events/un-day) are hosting more than 100 events in communities around the country. New polling from the UN Foundation's sister organization, the Better World Campaign, found that 87 percent of Americans agree that it is important "for the United States to maintain an active role within the United Nations."
